Gender and Adolescent Language

The writer done the observation relate to gender and language of adolescent. This observation aimed to determine the aggression and type of language that is used in conversation. In collecting the data, the writer applied the natural approach where she watched the conversation that happened in public facilities, such as; library, dining hall, classroom, and dormitory. However the targets didn’t realize that they were observed. The observation happened for 6 minutes with three intervals (one interval was 2-minute long).

The writer mostly observed the informal conversation. The males tend to show the aggressiveness in their words, such as: “damn”, “o…shit”, etc.
The problem of this research was the conversation sometimes occurred no long than 6 minutes. However, the writer found some points that showed the difference between male in female languages. They are about the topic of conversation and the response of listener. The females mostly talked about their personal life, they often discussed about their personal experience such as the type of boy friend, family, and future carrier, etc. on the other hand, the topic of males’ conversation is more about their activities and hobbies, such as: who win the game today, the sport, and club. Additionally, the females tried to keep the conversation on and on. According to Irene Van Baalen “ in informal cross sex conversations women are said to make more efforts to keep the conversation going by asking the question”. Moreover, the females seemed to give more attention on the conversation, the writer found that during the conversation, females showed differences facial expression relate to the story, for example: when the speaker talked about her mom that was in hospital, the listener’s face would change to be sympathy. On the contrary, the male would give the neutral expression during the conversation.
By doing this project, the learned how the people speak and it helps the writer to socialize. It also helps her to communicate whether with same or mixed sex.
